1. General resources

• The trauma.org sitemap is extremely useful. There are good sections on injury prevention, resuscitation, anaesthesia and intensive care and a lot more. You'll also find a number of useful sites by looking at their web pointers section.
• eMedicine has a large section on environmental injury. Their trauma and orthopaedics section is here

2. Burns

• A short, general article from Australia on burn management.
• BurnSurgery.org is intended to be a comprehensive educational resource for "burn care professionals". (For those on a slower link, it is fairly graphic-rich).
• An article on burns from emedicine that is probably worth a read.
• The Merck Manual has a fair article on burns.
• The burn nutrition module at burnsurgery.org is a must. (By the way, take a look at the ASPEN guidelines for feeding in ICU. Although not specifically burn-directed, they are worth a peek).

3. Lightning and Electrical Injury

• Here's a really impressive article on lightning and electrical injury from 1995 Seminars in Neurology. A good resource from the University of Illinois Lightning Research Unit.

• Bill Hark has written a short article on lightning strikes.

• And here's something from the Emergency central resource website.

• NASA have quite a lot of information on lightning strike, and some URLs.

• The Mayo Clinic has a scary article on lightning strike.

• The AHA advisory statements on electric shock are here.

4. Hyperthermia

• An excellent AFP article on heat-related illness

• US Army 'USARIEM' notes on heat injury are fairly thorough.

• Notes on heat illness as a sports emergency

• A brief British note on heat stroke, for lay persons. American Institute of Preventive Medicine lay information on heat exhaustion.

5. Hypothermia

• A good article at the Virtual Naval Hospital with some useful pictures.
• Hypothermia.org is a good site for general information about hypothermia and its prevention. The site carries a fairly comprehensive article on hypothermia in special situations by A. Weinberg. The front page could be made a bit more user-friendly, but it's well worth a visit.
• A concise article from the University of Western Ontario on hypothermia and its management ("the berries"). A good site generally.
• There's a somewhat telegraphic but otherwise rather good lecture on hypothermia at the University of Sydney site (circa 1991 ?).
• An extensively referenced medical grand round on hypothermia on the Jeghers site looks at the literature prior to 1965.
• Here's a really interesting article on induced hypothermia from 1996, published in Anaesthesia and Intensive care.
• Here's a picture of J-waves on ECG. Here are some more pictures with high-resolution images also available.

6.Drowning, Strangulation and Asphyxiation

• A thoroughly referenced article on near drowning from India. Worth a read.
• There's a fair article on drowning at eMedicine.com Check it out!
• A well laid out article at Tennessee EMS for Children.

7. Poisoning

Remember that with poisoning, supportive measures are often more important that specific antidotes (with a few notable exceptions).

• MedAu has a overview of poisoning, mainly in point form, that serves as a good introduction to the subject.
• The Virtual Naval Hospital has a large page on poisoning
• The Merck Manual has sections on paracetamol, aspirin, caustics, lead, iron and hydrocarbon poisoning. Not a bad list!

8. Envenomation

• For information on envenomation by a variety of organisms, you probably don't need to look much further than eMedicine which has a fairly comprehensive section.

9. Other (altitude, barotrauma..)

Barotrauma and Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

Unfortunately the web is replete with unsubstantiated allegations about the efficacy of HBOT in a variety of disorders. We have tried to avoid such websites in our list!
• Diving Medicine Online is an excellent site for information about barotrauma and other hazards of diving.
• Thomas Bozzuto has written a good overview of hyperbaric therapy in emergency medicine. Definitely worth a read.
• Lawrence Martin's webpage, Scuba Diving Explained is beautiful. (Even though it's promoting his book).
• As expected, eMedicine has a substantial article on decompression sickness.

  Altitude sickness

• A fine article on altitude sickness by Gerhard Ruhl, that includes a barometric pressure calculator.
• Rather good Canadian evidence-based recommendations from Health-Canada Online. (A fairly well-designed website, too).
• A reasonable introduction to high altitude.
